Tonatiuh - Fifth Sun

Placed Horizontally, the design represents Tonatiuh, Fifth Sun, which is its principal attribute and symbol in the center as the cosmic intrepation of the AztecSun. Thus the Central area of the Sun Stone, represents the Face of the Sun wearing a turqoise nose, necklace and headress ornaments, as it sticks out its tongueshaped as a sacrificial knife, representing its ceaseless hunger for the hearts of sacraficial ones

The detailed triangles emanating outwards are reprsentative of sunrays. The talons at the side are Tonatiuh is the Sun climbing skywards, seizing the hearts of sacrificial ones on which it fed. Fangs are associated in conjuction with claws. The talons are decorated with a jade beaded bracelet or Chachihuites -small concentric circles- with five precious feathers. The circles on top and bottom of the talons are the Four Numerals of the calendrical name of the Sun, Nahui Ollin, Four Movement.
